Description
Beneath Japan's mountains lies an enormous hidden world of tunnels, chambers, transportation systems, water infrastructure, ventilation networks, and critical facilities.
Japan is one of the world's most mountainous countries, with much of its usable land concentrated around narrow coastal plains. With limited space above ground, engineers have increasingly turned to the underground.
But building deep inside a mountain is far more complicated than simply digging a tunnel.
Engineers must deal with rock pressure, groundwater, earthquakes, ventilation, temperature, structural stability, and long-term maintenance. Exploratory drilling, rock bolts, steel supports, concrete linings, drainage systems, sensors, and emergency infrastructure all become part of the engineering system.
In this documentary, we explore how Japan builds through mountains, beneath cities, and deep inside the rock—and why some of its most impressive infrastructure is almost completely invisible from the surface.
From underground transportation to enormous chambers and hidden utility systems, discover the engineering world beneath Japan.
