Description
How to reload a wood stove on hot coals: where the firewood goes, where the coals go, and the door, air, and ash steps that keep smoke out of your room.
You're about to put a log right on top of those coals. Hold it. This is the wood stove reload most people get wrong, and the one move that changes it.
Elias's book (80+ chapters of old-ways skills): https://eliasmercer.com
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
How to reload a wood stove without smothering the coals. How to rake coals forward and place firewood on and behind them. How to read a bed of coals before you reload. Why dry, seasoned, split firewood matters. How to open the stove door slowly to keep smoke out of the room. When to turn the air control down so the fire doesn't smolder and blacken the glass. How much ash to leave in the firebox, and how to dispose of ash safely.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Anyone heating with a wood stove, cabin owners, homesteaders, off-grid families, and first-year wood burners.
SAFETY
Every stove is different. Follow your stove's manual and your local codes. Some manuals say to spread coals level, and the manual wins. Treat all ash as hot. Use a lidded metal container, keep it outside away from anything that burns, and never use paper, plastic, or cardboard.
How do you reload yours? Rake the coals forward, spread them, or straight on top? Tell me in the comments. The best one may become the next video.
Don't let the old days go, friend.
