In 1943, German radio proudly announced that the aircraft carrier USS Ranger had been sunk in the North Atlantic. There was only one problem: Ranger had never been hit and wasn’t even there. Months later, the carrier Germany had already declared dead appeared off occupied Norway for one of the most daring American carrier raids of World War II. Too lightly protected for the brutal carrier battles of the Pacific, Ranger instead used surprise, intelligence, and distance to strike German-controlled shipping hiding inside Norway’s narrow coastal waterways. On October 4, waves of SBD Dauntless dive bombers, TBF Avengers, and F4F Wildcats swept toward Bodø and Sandnessjøen, attacking tankers, cargo ships, harbor targets, and an ammunition vessel while flying through intense anti-aircraft fire. Several American aircraft were destroyed or badly damaged, including Gerald Thomas’s crippled Avenger, which limped nearly 100 miles back toward Ranger with a failing engine, oil covering the windscreen, and a crew unable to bail out before crashing into the carrier’s barrier during an extraordinary landing. German reconnaissance aircraft eventually searched for the carrier, but Ranger’s Wildcats shot down two scouts before they could reveal her position. By the time German command understood what had happened, Ranger was already disappearing into the Norwegian Sea, leaving ships burning, sunk, grounded, or crippled behind her. This is the incredible story of USS Ranger, the carrier Germany falsely claimed to have destroyed and the surprise raid that finally gave America’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier the mission she had been waiting for.
