Description

STOP Buying Moonshine! I Turned a $3 Mountain Dew Into Real Appalachian Moonshine Come here, young’un. Close the door. Half of what you were told about moonshine is wrong. Not a little wrong. BACKWARDS wrong. Somebody told you moonshine makes you blind. Somebody told you a three-dollar soda could never become real liquor. And somebody told you the jar on the store shelf is the genuine article. All three of them loved you, and all three passed it down like a family ring that turned out to be glass. I sat on this porch and watched two distillers in New Zealand, where home distilling has been legal since 1996, take a pile of Mountain Dew, ferment it, and run it through a bubble-plate still. Here are seven truths from that run. Not opinions, just what actually happened in the bucket and in the column. ⚠️ Making liquor at home is against federal law in the United States, even for your own table. This video is history and a story, not a how-to. Check the law where you live. ⭐ THE 7 TRUTHS THE SODA WAS NAMED AFTER THE LIQUOR. Not the other way around. Mountain Dew was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, around 1940, as a mixer for whiskey, and it took an old mountain nickname for white liquor. That green bottle was a chaser before it was ever a lunchbox drink. IT WAS NEVER THE YEAST. IT WAS THE CAN. Mountain Dew is sour (around pH 3.3) and has a preservative built to keep living things out. The sugar was in there the whole time. The can was just standing guard. THE LAZY JAR FERMENTED TOO. Two hours of fussing against a jar with nothing but yeast thrown in. The careful batch came out about 10% stronger. That’s a real case for doing it right, but nobody has to lose this argument. ⭐ THE WHOLE LAW IN SIX WORDS: HEADS YOU TOSS. HEARTS YOU KEEP. Every run comes in three parts: heads, hearts and tails. The still doesn’t make liquor. It only finds it. THE STILL MUST SIGH, NOT ROAR. Keep your heat and your water in the middle so you always have room to move. A thing done in a hurry gets done twice. THE FLAVOR CAME THROUGH. It smelled like popping the cap on a fresh bottle and tasted like the green freezer pop every kid fought over in July. It behaved like a fruit brandy, not a whiskey. ⭐ “MOONSHINE MAKES YOU BLIND” WAS NEVER THE CORN. IT WAS GREED. Lead-soldered car radiators and liquor stretched with alcohol never meant for drinking did the damage. Never drink a jar you didn’t see made. Not your cousin’s. Not the pretty one at the craft fair. THE HONEST WORDS (like always): The ferment quit early and stayed sweet, because Mountain Dew doesn’t like to be finished. It came off the column at 180 proof, nearly vodka, and three plates scrubbed out a lot of the green. Fewer plates would have carried more Dew across. They cut it to 100 proof and mixed it with regular Mountain Dew in fancy whiskey glasses. They called it Double Duty, and it tasted better than anybody expected. ONE BOTTLE, FIVE STORIES: a name the mountains gave it → a nickname for liquor older than any of us → a mixer two brothers in Knoxville made for their whiskey → more sugar than a glass of apple juice → and a whiskey tax written in 1791 that started a rebellion by 1794. Moonshine was never a flavor. It was a tax status. This week, do only TWO things: read the sugar line on the soda in your fridge, and look up the law where you live before anybody tells you a still is harmless. Then tell me in the comments, and tell me your county. And tell me the truth: were you told moonshine makes you blind too? I want to see how far that piece of glass traveled. Next time on this porch: the old shake test, why the old-timers read the bead on a jar to judge the proof, and why that test lies more often than a horse trader. #moonshine #appalachia #mountaindew #appalachianhistory #oldways
