A Day in the Life of a Roman Soldier

What was a normal day actually like for a Roman soldier? Forget the battles for a moment. Most of a Roman soldier’s life was spent doing something far less glamorous — waking before sunrise, preparing his equipment, marching under a heavy load, building camps, maintaining roads and defenses, standing watch, eating simple meals, and following orders that could determine whether he lived or died.
