Description
The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the deepest hole ever drilled into Earth, reaching 12,262 meters below the surface. But why did Soviet engineers stop drilling at 12 KM?
In this documentary, we uncover the extreme heat, borehole collapse, warped steel, failed drilling mud, and material-science limits that turned the Kola SG-3 project into one of history’s greatest engineering challenges.
Located on Russia’s Kola Peninsula, the Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled to study Earth’s crust. By 1989, the borehole reached 12,262 meters—deeper than the height of Mount Everest. However, temperatures reached approximately 180°C, far beyond original predictions.
Steel drill strings warped. Rubber seals failed. Downhole electronics stopped working. Drilling mud degraded under heat, while pressure caused the granite borehole walls to creep inward and close the shaft.
This video also investigates the famous “Well to Hell” story, the alleged screams recorded beneath Earth, and why that sensational claim was later exposed as fiction.
In this video:
• Kola Superdeep Borehole explained
• Why engineers stopped drilling 12 KM into Earth
• The deepest hole on Earth
• Kola SG-3 engineering failures
• 180°C underground temperatures
• Soviet deep-drilling technology
• The Well to Hell myth explained
• Borehole collapse and rock pressure
• Deep geothermal energy and future drilling
