Description
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, severe flash flooding hit the Las Vegas Valley as the remnants of post-tropical storm Rachel swept across the region. High-intensity rainfall produced record-breaking precipitation totals at Harry Reid International Airport, breaking a daily record set in 2012 and marking the wettest day in the city in over seven years. The storm prompted road closures, water rescues, high wind damage, and travel delays across Nevada, California, and Arizona.
The deluge was caused by a large surge of tropical moisture from former Hurricane Rachel interacting with an upper-level atmospheric system as it moved inland. With desert soil unable to absorb the intense bursts of rain rapidly enough, storm channels and roadways flooded quickly, with the heaviest rainfall totals exceeding two and a half inches in the western valley.
In this video, viewers will see floodwaters rushing through streets near the Las Vegas Strip, emergency water rescues carried out by first responders, wind damage to local power lines, and storm impacts extending across the desert Southwest.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
