For ten years these were sold as the safe, timeless choices. Now, in 2026, designers are quietly tearing them back out, and the oldest houses in America never contained a single one of them. Charles Ashworth counts down ten interior trends on their way out in 2026, and shows what traditional old houses did instead and why those rooms still look right while the fashionable ones expire on schedule. From staged social media rooms, matte black hardware, wavy squiggle furniture, high gloss and chrome, and oversized cloud sofas, to matchy single-store furniture sets, bouclé organic modern, beige-on-beige drenching, the open concept floor plan, and the all-white cool gray interior. Along the way: the open-plan survey split, the honest resale counterpoint, and the one hidden rule that ties all ten trends together. This is general design history and decorating information, not professional structural or building advice. If you are thinking of taking out or adding a wall, talk to a qualified professional.
