Description
When a young Nero ascended the Roman throne it was all because of his mother, Agrippina the Younger. But behind the propaganda reliefs and imperial coinage lay a fragile illusion that quickly shattered into Rome's most pivotal betrayals.
I examine the Nero and Agrippina Sebasteion relief at Aphrodisias, Roman imperial propaganda, and how the reality of a serene mother and son depiction, was actually a front for hostile politics. Nero would meet his end but not before ensuring Agrippina was no longer a threat, but why then was this relief made and what is the context behind it?
