Description

#Sligoville #SligovilleStCatherineJamaica Sligoville is a historic community located in the hills of St. Catherine, Jamaica, situated roughly 10 miles north of Spanish Town. It holds monumental historical significance as the very first Free Village established in Jamaica and the wider West Indies, serving as a foundational blueprint for post-emancipation society. 📜 Historical Significance • The First Free Village: Established on July 10, 1835, the community was founded by Baptist minister and abolitionist Rev. James Mursell Phillippo. Anticipating the end of the post-slavery apprenticeship system, Phillippo purchased 25 acres of land for £100 and subdivided it into quarter-acre lots to sell to newly emancipated individuals. • The First Buyer: A former enslaved headman named Henry Lunan from the neighboring Hampstead Estate purchased the very first lot for £3. • The Naming: Originally known as Highgate, the settlement was officially renamed Sligoville on June 12, 1840. This was done to honor Howe Peter Browne, the 2nd Marquess of Sligo, who served as the Governor of Jamaica and oversaw the initial transition into full freedom. • The Pinnacle Community: Sligoville is also famous for hosting Pinnacle, an early and highly influential Rastafarian village founded by Leonard Howell, which operated in the area from 1940 until it was dismantled by authorities in 1958. 📍 Key Landmarks • Highgate House Ruins: The remnants of a historic property linked to the area’s pre-emancipation era. • Sligoville Great House: A historic colonial manor representing the architectural past of the region. • St. John’s Anglican Church: One of the prominent early spiritual and communal centers established in the hills.
