Description

Every Serpent in Greek Mythology Explained Python was born from the mud and rot left behind after the great flood of Deucalion, a creature dragged up from the earth itself, and from the beginning it was immense — a dragon-serpent so vast it coiled across the slopes of Mount Parnassus and claimed the oracle at Delphi as its own domain. Before Apollo, Python was the keeper of that prophetic power, the guardian of a site considered the center of the world. Apollo killed it shortly after his own birth, reportedly driving thousands of arrows into its body until it collapsed, and then he took everything — the mountain, the oracle, the sacred site — and renamed them in the serpent's memory.
