Why These Amish Families Left Wyoming Right now, in the least populated state in America, the Amish are doing something they have never managed to do in the American West. They are growing fast. In 2018, Wyoming had a single Amish settlement and roughly 100 Amish. Today it has five settlements and about 535 people. No Western state has grown faster. This is a state of only about half a million people, one of the largest in area and the smallest in population, and the Amish have found room in it. And yet this summer, near the little town of Hulett, Amish families held an estate moving sale, watched their belongings go to neighbors, and left the state for good.
