Why have Indian film awards lost their credibility?
The Dark Reality of Bollywood Awards EXPOSED?
From Filmfare Awards and Filmfare OTT Awards to the National Film Awards, Bollywood award shows have faced years of controversy, criticism and questions about their voting systems, award selections, celebrity attendance, industry influence and overall credibility.
In this video, we investigate what went wrong with Indian film awards and why audiences no longer treat these award shows the way they once did.
We discuss controversial award wins involving films and actors such as Chandu Champion, I Want To Talk, Jigra, Gully Boy, Hero, Prem Aggan, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Animal, Sam Bahadur, Dabangg, My Name Is Khan, Swades, Hum Tum, Rustom, Dangal, Aligarh, Pushpa and The Kerala Story.
We also look at some of the biggest controversies surrounding Filmfare and the National Film Awards, including Rishi Kapoor's public comments about buying an award, debates around nepotism and debut awards, the Gully Boy award sweep, National Award controversies, the 2018 National Film Awards boycott, and criticism from Bollywood celebrities including Aamir Khan, Kangana Ranaut, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Naseeruddin Shah, Yami Gautam and Prakash Raj.
But the bigger question is:
Why did Indian award shows lose the trust of the audience?
Are these awards still about artistic merit, or have television ratings, celebrity appearances, sponsorships, popularity and industry relationships become too important?
We also compare the Indian award-show ecosystem with the Oscars voting system and discuss how Indian film awards could potentially become more transparent, independent and credible.=
