Description

Black American culture has had an enormous influence on American entertainment — but who gets the opportunities to represent, perform and profit from that culture? In this Taj360 commentary, I react to a panel discussion and examine what I see as a growing tension around Black American identity, representation, immigration and cultural ownership. Throughout the video, I use examples from entertainment to explain why I believe lineage and cultural connection still matter when discussing Black American identity. This isn't simply about individual entertainers. The bigger question is whether institutions increasingly treat different Black populations as interchangeable — even when their histories, cultures and experiences aren't the same. Is Black American identity simply a racial category, or does lineage and culture matter? Drop your perspective in the comments.
