NEVER Stay in Bed in a Power Outage Without This Plan (Retired 911 Dispatcher)

Staying in bed during a winter power outage feels like the careful choice. Retired 911 dispatcher Walt Tanner explains why bed with no plan can quietly turn dangerous for older adults, and what to do instead. I spent 35 years on emergency lines and in county emergency management. The problems that put people at risk in a long outage almost never make noise, so they’re easy to miss, for you and for the people who love you. What’s covered: Why a sleeping person and a person in trouble sound the same on the phone How a day disappears when the lights are out The reason people stop drinking on purpose, and the simple fix How a room that’s “just cool” can still chill you A safer way to get out of bed after hours of lying still One purposeful lap through the house, with a reason for every stop A check-in signal that can’t be answered with “fine” 💬 Tell me in the comments: what do you keep telling yourself you’ll do “in a minute” when it’s cold?
