Description
In August of 1993 a repairman stood in my kitchen and told me the refrigerator wasn't worth fixing. The part
it needed was $4.18. That refrigerator is still running behind me, and a new one today is $1,100.
I'm Ruth Sawyer. I've kept a logger's house on Sawyer Ridge, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, since 1977,
and every dollar this house ever spent is in a ledger on the shelf behind me.
These are the 15 things my mother taught me to fix instead of replace: the wobbly chair, the dripping faucet,
the running toilet, the lamp you have to jiggle, the zipper, the sweater with a hole, the drawer that sticks,
the refrigerator, the torn screen, the slow drain, the steam iron, the window that's painted shut, the vacuum,
the sewing machine, and the pipe that splits on the coldest night of the year. For each one I read you the
receipt for the part, what it cost then, what it costs now, and how it's done.
Tell me in the comments one thing your mother or grandmother fixed that everybody throws out now, your county,
and what she called it. The one with the most comments is the one I open the can for next.
Next time: the 12 things I put in the pantry before the first snow.
Ruth Sawyer is brought to life with the help of modern AI tools. The prices, the receipts and the methods are
real and checked. I'm not a plumber or an electrician. Anything with gas, or anything that sparks, call a
real hand. This isn't a homemaking channel. It's a ledger somebody kept for 49 years.
Write it down, friend. Paper remembers.
