Description
In 2011, Japan’s massive tsunami defenses were overwhelmed, destroying coastal barriers and devastating communities along the Tohoku coast. Japan responded with a roughly $12 billion coastal defense program spanning about 400 kilometers, but building it meant far more than simply constructing a giant seawall.
This documentary goes inside the engineering behind Japan’s extraordinary tsunami defense system—from underwater rubble foundations and steel sheet piles to reinforced embankments, tetrapods, automated floodgates and earthquake-resistant structures. Discover how one of the world’s largest coastal megaprojects was designed to reduce tsunami damage and, most importantly, give people more time to escape.
Thank you for watching: Why is Japan Building a $12BN Giant Wall?
