The Entire History of Mesopotamia Explained

Mesopotamia was where some of humanity’s earliest experiments with cities, writing, government, law, mathematics, and large-scale civilization began. But Mesopotamia was never just one empire. From the first cities of Sumer and the invention of cuneiform writing, to the Akkadian Empire, Babylon, Hammurabi, the powerful Assyrians, the rise of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, Persia, Alexander the Great, and the later rise of Baghdad, this region was transformed again and again. In this video, we travel through thousands of years of Mesopotamian history and explore how different peoples built upon what came before them. We’ll see how cities like Uruk and Babylon rose, why Assyria became one of the most powerful military empires of the ancient Near East, how Babylon became a center of power and learning, and how the region eventually became part of the wider Islamic world. And despite the collapse of countless kingdoms and empires, the legacy of Mesopotamia survived through writing, mathematics, astronomy, law, administration, literature, and the development of cities.
