Description

A full can of insect spray ringed my tent one night last summer, and by first light there was a two-inch striped bark scorpion riding in the toe of my boot anyway. It wasn't hunting me, and that's really the whole point of this video. It wanted the dark, tight, warm, slightly damp space my boot happened to be, and once you understand what scorpions and two specific spiders are actually looking for, you can take those four things away without ever needing a can of anything. I walk through eight places around any campsite where they get in, starting with the boot almost everyone already suspects and working through the ones nobody thinks to check, gloves and cuffs, anything flat sitting on the ground, open packs, clothing left hanging overnight, and the single biggest carrier of both scorpions and recluse spiders of the whole list. I also cover a ten-dollar UV flashlight trick that can spot a scorpion thirty feet away in total darkness, and I'm straightforward about exactly which symptoms after a sting or bite mean wait it out versus which ones mean get to a hospital right now, including the two spiders worth taking seriously and why one of them is dangerous precisely because its bite doesn't hurt at first. None of these habits cost a dime except the light. Tell me the strangest place your granddad, or anyone in your family, ever found a scorpion. I read every one, and whatever story comes up most is what I go deep on next.
