Description
The Supermarine Spitfire was one of Britain’s greatest fighters, but turning it into an aircraft-carrier fighter created a machine that was brilliant in the air and dangerously uncomfortable at sea. The resulting Seafire retained much of the Spitfire’s speed and agility, but its narrow landing gear, fragile fuselage, poor forward visibility, and high landing speed made carrier operations brutal. Britain was desperate enough that early conversions relied on improvised solutions including wooden wedges for the flaps, riveted reinforcement plates, and lead weights bolted near the engine to correct the aircraft’s balance.
The consequences became horrifying during the 1943 invasion of Salerno. Of roughly 106 Seafires, only 39 remained flyable by the third day, and while just two were shot down in combat, another 40 were lost or written off for reasons unrelated to enemy action.
Yet the disaster hid what the Seafire could actually do. Better-trained squadrons later dramatically reduced landing accidents, and in the Pacific the fighter’s exceptional acceleration and climb made it particularly well suited to intercepting Japanese aircraft. During the final weeks of World War II, Seafires flew nearly 1,200 sorties, culminating in a final dogfight over Japan in which they destroyed seven Japanese fighters while losing only one of their own.
The design continued into Korea, but years of brutal carrier landings finally exposed the weakness that had been there from the beginning: its airframe simply could not withstand the punishment forever. By September 1950, only three aircraft in its squadron remained fit to fly.
The Seafire could outperform aircraft that ultimately replaced it in the sky, but those aircraft could survive something it struggled with from its very first day at sea: landing back on the carrier.
