Description
Two leaders. One ZANU-PF conference. Two very different messages about Zimbabwe's future.
At the 2026 ZANU-PF conference in Chinhoyi, President Emmerson Mnangagwa celebrated party unity, economic achievements and ZANU-PF's ambition to govern Zimbabwe "in perpetuity."
Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, meanwhile, demanded brutal and honest self-appraisal. He questioned whether party resolutions genuinely reflect the wishes of ordinary people, whether economic development is improving livelihoods and whether leaders are putting public service above personal ambition.
In this Zimwaves TV political commentary, we compare their speeches using original video excerpts and examine the deeper questions:
- Is the campaign for 2030 genuinely coming from the grassroots?
- What do the proposed constitutional changes mean for presidential tenure?
- Can ZANU-PF tolerate disagreement within its own ranks?
- Who is benefiting from Zimbabwe's economic growth?
- What responsibility do Mnangagwa and Chiwenga share for the Second Republic's record?
- Has Zimbabwe returned to the succession struggles that defined the end of Robert Mugabe's presidency?
We also revisit the November 2017 transition, the role of politically connected business interests, and Chinhoyi's liberation history.
Mnangagwa was speaking about why ZANU-PF deserves to remain in government. Chiwenga was asking whether ZANU-PF is doing enough to deserve that power.
