Just Add 1 Cup of THIS to Their Feed to Get More Eggs Year-Round
If your hens have stopped laying for the winter and you are tired of wasting money on supplements and fancy lighting rigs, the fix is something cheap you probably already have in your feed room. The problem is not your girls — it is that winter triggers a molt that redirects protein away from egg production and into feather regrowth, and most feeding advice actually makes things worse. Here are five straightforward things you can do to get your nest boxes filling back up through the coldest months, no expensive equipment required.
Everything I walk through today is written out with exact amounts in my guide, Happy Hens, Healthy Flock. The chapter on winter laying covers all of this step by step. Link below.
What's covered:
Mix one cup of food-grade fish meal into every ten pounds of layer feed from October through January to shift the protein balance back toward egg production during molt
Why feeding more layer pellets is not the answer and actually leads to weight gain instead of more eggs
Keep oyster shell in a separate dish so hens can self-regulate their calcium intake instead of mixing it into pellets
Use a simple timer for fourteen hours of light and start it before dawn rather than leaving a light on all night
Empty and rotate your feed bins every six weeks because mould at the bottom suppresses appetite and production even when the top looks fine
Add a small handful of scratch grains in the evening so hens have enough slow-burning calories to stay warm and keep laying through the winter
This is general flock husbandry guidance, not veterinary advice. If a hen is lethargic, off her feed, or showing signs of illness, contact a veterinarian.
