Description

A stump doesn't need muscle or a machine. It needs the four things rot is short of, and handing them over takes one afternoon. In this video I walk through the method I grew up with in the interior of Alaska, where the ground was too cold to rot anything on its own and you had to help it along. How to tell what your stump is made of and how long it will really take, why the Epsom salt in the holes was working against you, what to put in there instead, and the one cheap thing from your kitchen that gets a stalled stump moving again in year two. Also covered: when digging is the right call, when to just pay for grinding and what to ask before you do, and why you call 811 before the shovel comes out. The work is quick. The stump takes its time. Nothing here costs much, and most of it costs nothing. Tell me in the comments: if you watched somebody in your family deal with a stump when you were young, what kind of tree was it, what part of the country, and what did they put on it? I'm not an arborist, an electrician or your county's burn officer. Know your local rules, read the label on anything you buy, and call a professional where a job needs one.
