Description
On the night of May 10, 1941, Rudolf Hess, the Deputy Führer of Nazi Germany and Hitler's designated successor after Göring, climbed into a Messerschmitt Bf 110 near Augsburg and flew alone across the North Sea toward Scotland. He told no one. He left behind only a sealed letter addressed to Hitler, with instructions to deliver it the following morning at the Berghof.
What happened inside that mountain retreat when Hitler finally read the letter set off one of the fastest political purges of the entire Nazi era. Offices abolished, aides sent to concentration camps, a propaganda story rewritten three times in a single week, and a standing order given in private that no one dared put in writing.
This is the full story of Rudolf Hess's flight, Hitler's reaction, and the 48 hours that reshaped the Nazi power structure.
