Description
Black spots in the white silicone line where your tub meets the wall? Here's how to clean moldy shower silicone without scrubbing or leaving bleach-soaked toilet paper on it overnight, and the one wipe that tells you first if a spray can even reach it.
In this video: the paper towel test that shows whether black mold is sitting on top of your caulk or has grown inside it, the fingernail check for silicone pulling away from the tile, how to use RMR-86 mold stain remover on a tub corner with no scrubbing, why that spray is bleach and what you must never mix it with, why black mold keeps coming back on shower caulk (it feeds on soap scum), why no spray can reach mold that has grown inside the silicone, how to remove old moldy silicone with a razor and put in a fresh bead, why a shower needs 100% silicone and not latex caulk, and the bathroom fan habit that keeps mold from coming back.
If you've tried the bleach and toilet paper trick, scrubbed caulk that still looks gray, or see caulk lifting in the corner of your tub, start here.
RMR-86 Instant Mold & Mildew Stain Remover is about $9 at Walmart: spray from 6 to 8 inches away, wait until the stain is gone (usually a couple of minutes), then rinse well and let it dry. It's sodium hypochlorite, the same stuff that's in laundry bleach, so wear gloves, open a window, run the fan, test a hidden spot first, keep it off fabric, and never add vinegar or any other acid. GE Advanced Silicone for kitchen and bath is about $8; the tube says water-ready in 30 minutes and 10 years of mold resistance once it cures. Soap scum is your soap plus the calcium in your water (USGS). A wet spot that dries within a day or two usually won't grow mold (EPA). Run the bathroom fan for 20 minutes after every shower (Home Ventilating Institute).
