Rich and Poor’s Nazrana | Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah’s Powerful Response

What matters more — the amount you give, or the intention behind it? This powerful historical story from the time of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah teaches a profound lesson about nazrana, niyyat, humility, sincerity, and showing off. During an audience with members of the Baitul Khiyal in Bombay Jamatkhana, permission was given to collect contributions and present them to the Imam as nazrana. Among the congregation, a poor man prepared one rupee as his contribution. A wealthy man sitting beside him initially took out a smaller amount, but after seeing the poor man's one-rupee note, he felt that his status and prestige required him to give more. He ultimately contributed ten rupees. When the collected nazrana was presented to the Imam, Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah examined the contributions and returned nine and a half rupees to the wealthy man, explaining that the Imam had accepted his niyyat (intention) but that the additional amount represented false show and hypocrisy. The story reminds us that in spiritual life, sincerity matters more than outward display.
