Description
There's a sound I hadn't heard in about thirty years, and I didn't notice it was
gone until recently. A card table being set up on grass. That aluminum snap when
the legs lock.
Once that table was up, the same things went on it, in the same order, at every
cookout from here to Chicago. Nobody organized it. There was no list. And yet you
could go to a cookout three states away, at people you'd never met, and that table
looked exactly the same.
Most of what was on it is gone now. Not all of it — some things survived — but a
good portion of that table quietly disappeared in the last forty years and nobody
held a funeral for any of it.
Twenty of them in this one. I'd put money on you not being able to name half before
I say them.
Some of what I go through:
- Why red drink is a category and not a brand, and how far back that color goes
- The potato salad rule nobody wrote down and everybody followed
- What "doctored" meant, and why nobody made beans from scratch for a cookout
- Souse, hog maws and pig ear sandwiches — and how a dish actually dies
- Why sun tea wasn't a health trend, and when the sugar has to go in
- Hoop cheese, and the country stores it came from
- Why scoring grilled bologna is technique and not decoration
- The watermelon history a lot of families made real decisions about
- The plate that got fixed and covered in foil before anybody else ate
Tell me in the comments what was on your family's table that I didn't name.
Somebody watching this had an uncle who brought the same thing every single year
that I've never heard of — that's genuinely why I read every one of these.
More of this every few days. Subscribe if you want the next one.
