Alexander Schönberg: Hamburg's Best Fine-Art Street Photographer

Alexander Schönberg is a fine-art street photographer based in Hamburg. He came to photography in a pretty unexpected way, after years of making music, a doctor told him to walk more, for health reasons. He got bored just walking, bought a camera the same day, and that’s how it started, October 2015. His work sits somewhere between architecture, street, and fine art. City scenes, weather, lone figures, bridges, fog, rain, snow. Hamburg is his main playground. Speicherstadt, the harbor, puddle reflections, winter storms, but he also shoots other cities when he travels. He likes photos that feel like they have a small story in them, even if it’s just one person crossing a big space. He works in both color and black and white. A lot of his photo have a quiet, moody look with foggy mornings, wet streets, strong geometry. He’s done longer projects too, including a book on Hamburg’s bridges. Over the years he’s picked up quite a few awards in architecture, cityscape, and street categories. Gear-wise he mostly shoots Sony (A9 II with a 24-70, plus fast primes at night) and sometimes film.
