I’m Harlan Whitsett, a retired county deputy and longtime firearms instructor, and I’ve seen how the small details can make all the difference when an older person lives alone. In this video, I cover the mistakes that can leave you vulnerable: weak locks, misplaced keys, inaccessible safes, poor lighting, phones out of reach, unsafe movement through the house, unknown visitors with keys, thin walls, and confusion when deputies arrive. I also explain why your plan has to work when you are tired, unsteady, or not wearing your glasses or hearing aids. I’m not a lawyer or a doctor, so I’ll point you toward the right professionals where health and state law are involved. My goal is to help you build a simple plan around the gun, not rely on the gun alone.
