Everything You Know About the Wild West Is Wrong

How much of what you think you know about the Old West is actually true? In today’s compilation, we’ll dig into three of the most persistent myths in Western history. First up, frontier justice. Everybody knows they hanged horse thieves, except the legal record tells a very different story, and a lot of the West's most notorious horse thieves walked away with surprisingly light sentences. Then we take on bounty hunters, and the drifting gunman tearing wanted posters off the wall, who turns out to be almost entirely an invention of dime novels and Hollywood. Most reward money went to men who already wore a badge. And finally, the big one. When did the Old West actually begin, and when did it end? The answer is messier than you'd think, especially considering there were Apache raiding parties riding out of the Sierra Madre into New Mexico as late as 1924, and one man who rode with Geronimo claimed there were still free Apaches down in those mountains in the 1950s. Plus, we settle the question of how many men Judge Roy Bean, the Law West of the Pecos, actually hanged.
