It exists because Boeing wanted the 747 to work as a massive cargo aircraft too. Back in the 1960s, many airlines believed supersonic jets could eventually take over long-distance passenger travel. So Boeing designed the 747 with a backup plan: if passenger demand disappeared, the aircraft could still survive as a freighter. The easiest way to load oversized cargo was through the nose. But there was one problem: the cockpit was sitting exactly where that giant cargo door needed to open. So Boeing moved the cockpit above the main deck. Then, instead of leaving it sticking awkwardly into the airflow, engineers stretched the raised section backward to create a smoother aerodynamic shape.
