Description

The Best Way to Clean Tarnished Silver — No Polish, No Scrubbing (The Farmhouse Way) There is a box of silver in this house somewhere. Your mother's, or her mother's, or the set you were given when you married and have not touched in years. And it has been going darker in the dark ever since. You did not give up too soon. Four forks by hand is the better part of an hour, and there were forty more of them in that box. Any woman with anything else to do that day would have put the lid back on. Because you do not have to rub a single piece. There is a way to take that black off all forty at the same time, standing at your sink, in about two minutes, and it uses foil and baking soda and a kettle of hot water. And here is the part that will make you angry. The jar of polish you bought to take care of your silver was taking your silver off. Every jar of it is a fine abrasive, and every time you rub, you take the black away and you take a layer of your silver away with it. That is why the people who look after silver in museums say two to four polishings a year and no more. What I show you in this one does the opposite. It does not scrape the black off. It turns it back into silver and leaves it on the piece. In this one: ➤ What that black actually is, and why it is your silver and not dirt ➤ The one rule that decides whether this works or does nothing at all ➤ The exact measure of baking soda and salt, and why weak water is the reason it comes out slow for most people ➤ The three pieces in your box that must never go anywhere near this WHAT YOU NEED ➤ Aluminium foil ➤ Baking soda ➤ Table salt ➤ A basin, a roasting pan, or just the kitchen sink ➤ A kettle of very hot water BEFORE YOU START ➤ Keep your good knives out of it. The ones with a hollow handle and the blade set into it are held with a cement, and hot water softens that cement. ➤ Leave alone any piece with a deliberately darkened pattern. On a lot of old flatware that black was put there on purpose so the design would show. ➤ Nothing with stones, pearls, or a lacquer coating. ➤ Test the plainest spoon in the box first. Always. Tell me in the comments how long it took, and whether you could smell it working. And tell me your county, and whose silver it is, because I would guess most of you did not buy it, and there is a name attached to every one of those boxes. I read every one. Nothing here is lost. Just untaught. #silver #tarnish #farmhouse #oldways #heirloom
