Description

Before dinosaurs ruled the Earth, something else did. Around 260 million years ago, long before Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, or Stegosaurus ever existed, the planet belonged to a completely different empire of animals. These were not dinosaurs. Many of them were not even reptiles in the way most people imagine. They were synapsids, the ancient relatives of mammals, and for millions of years they dominated life on land. This was the world of Dimetrodon, dicynodonts, and the terrifying gorgonopsids: saber-toothed predators built like a cross between a wolf and a bear, stalking humid Permian forests on a supercontinent called Pangaea. But this world was not built to last. At the end of the Permian Period, Earth was hit by the worst mass extinction in its history: the Permian-Triassic extinction, better known as the Great Dying. Massive volcanic eruptions in Siberia flooded the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, heated the planet, acidified the oceans, damaged ecosystems, and helped wipe out most life on Earth. Nearly every gorgonopsid disappeared. Dicynodont herds were devastated. Entire food chains collapsed. The empire that ruled before dinosaurs simply stopped existing. And that is the twist. Dinosaurs did not rise because they were automatically better, stronger, or more advanced than everything before them. They rose because the world had been emptied first. The Great Dying cleared ecosystems, opened niches, and left behind a damaged planet where small, adaptable animals had a chance to survive and spread. This video explores the terrifying world before dinosaurs, the animals that ruled it, the catastrophe that destroyed it, and how the age of dinosaurs became possible only after almost everything else was gone.
