Description
Two prodigies, born months apart, raised on James Brown and gospel, pushed onto the world stage as shy kids — and turned into the most powerful rivals pop music has ever seen. One became the moonwalking perfectionist who studied every step and every camera angle. The other, a barefoot guitar assassin who refused to let anyone else produce his records. From the night Michael whispered in James Brown’s ear and “set up” Prince on stage, to the story Michael told for decades about Prince trying to run him and his mother over, this is the rivalry built on slights, sabotage and one-upmanship behind the scenes.
From Thriller versus 1999 to Purple Rain chasing down chart records, the competition got personal fast. Prince refusing to show up to “We Are the World” when he learned he’d be standing next to Michael. The legendary “Bad” duet that blew up over the line “Your butt is mine.” Petty insults hidden in couture — like that infamous cashmere coat jab about the “last time you had a hit.” And decades later in Las Vegas, Prince walking offstage, shredding a bass solo straight into Michael’s face as will.i.am and Chris Tucker watched in disbelief. Every time one of them moved, the other found a way to answer.
But under the shade and the stories, there was something else: respect neither of them would admit in public. Late-night talks at Paisley Park. Private visits where everyone else was told to leave the room. And after Michael’s sudden death, Prince canceling rehearsal, locking himself away for days, then sitting on a Swiss rooftop until sunrise talking about nothing but Michael’s genius, showmanship and gift. This is not a tabloid hit piece — it’s the story of two tortured perfectionists who needed each other as much as they resented the comparison.
Who do you think really was better — Michael or Prince? Or did the rivalry itself win by pushing both of them higher?
