Description

Long Beach, California, is facing severe coastal damage as remnants of Hurricane Rachel drive powerful Pacific waves over a failing wooden bulkhead and into beachfront homes. Several properties are leaning toward the surf, nine buildings covering thirteen addresses have been red-tagged, and evacuation measures remain in place. Meanwhile, Rachel’s moisture has brought heavy rain, flash flooding, and damaging winds across the Southwest. On the Long Beach Peninsula, emergency crews have reinforced the damaged boardwalk, positioned heavy sandbags, pumped floodwater, and monitored homes at risk of collapse. Although Sunday’s tides came in lower than forecast, water levels remained nearly two feet above predictions, with officials warning that additional coastal flooding remains possible. Farther inland, Las Vegas recorded its wettest day since February 2019, with flooding reaching a casino parking lot on the Strip. Flash flood warnings also covered parts of northwestern Arizona, including areas around Kingman and the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Strong winds disrupted travel, while additional storms threatened Nevada, Arizona, and southeastern California. In this video, we examine the damage to Long Beach homes, emergency coastal repairs, the ocean conditions driving unusually high water levels, and the flooding that spread from Southern California into the desert Southwest. Long Beach is pursuing a major beach restoration plan, but damaged coastal defenses and elevated tides could leave the Peninsula vulnerable through the coming days. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
