One dollar of foil and cardboard can block most of the heat pouring through your worst window — and it was ordinary household knowledge before AC was something regular families could afford. I found the proof in a dead repairman's notes from a box lot at an estate sale, three words scrawled on a loose page: "told them cardboard." No charge. Just the fix.
In this video I walk you through the actual build — a snug piece of cardboard, foil glued shiny-side out, dropped inside your window frame behind the curtain — and the DOE and emergency management numbers that explain why it works so well. An awning or reflective panel on the outside of the glass can cut heat gain by up to seventy-seven to eighty percent, versus about thirty-three percent for ordinary inside curtains. That's a massive gap, and it costs about two dollars to close it. I'll show you my own receipt, what the panel actually did to my hottest room, and the two safety rules you can't skip — especially the one about bedroom windows. 🧊🪟
