Description

I Drove Up To Check My Dad’s Old Cabin... Only To Find My Sister Already Moving In My father had bought the cabin in 1997 with the proceeds from selling his woodworking business—twelve years of custom furniture, one piece at a time, enough to buy eleven acres in the hills and a hand-built structure with a wraparound porch and a wood stove and a view of the ridge that he had described, on multiple occasions, as the best return on investment he’d ever made. He had spent the last twenty-two years of his life out there on weekends and all of August and the two weeks around Christmas, and he had taken me with him often enough that I knew where the good fishing spots were and which floorboards creaked and how to get the wood stove to draw without smoking up the main room. He had been gone for four months. I had been handling the estate—slowly, carefully, the way my father had handled everything, which was with the patience of a man who understood that rushing produced shoddy work. The will had been read in June. The cabin had been left to me. This was not a surprise to me. It may have been a surprise to my sister, but she had not given me any indication of her feelings about it either way, which I had taken as acceptance and now understood had been something else. #revenge #revengestories #familydramas
