Description

For nearly a century, South Texas has called this animal an antelope. It isn't one. Meet the nilgai, the "blue bull" of Texas, a 600-pound cousin of the cow that escaped every fence ever built for it. In 1930, a handful of nilgai from India were released on a giant South Texas ranch as an exotic curiosity. Today more than 30,000 roam free across the brush country of Kenedy, Kleberg, Willacy and Cameron counties, and they have crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico. Then they were blamed for helping a feared cattle parasite slip past one of the oldest disease barriers in America. But in 2024, Texas A&M AgriLife researchers asked a question nobody had tested: can the nilgai actually carry the disease? In this wildlife documentary you'll see: • What a nilgai really is, and why it's closer to a cow than to any antelope • How a few animals released for sport became a population spread across two countries • The cattle fever tick, Texas fever and the history of the cattle dipping vats • The tick riders who still patrol the Rio Grande quarantine line on horseback • The 2024 research that changed the story, and what scientists still don't know CHAPTERS 0:00 The Blue Bull at First Light 1:30 Portrait of a Misnamed Animal 3:00 From the Plains of India 4:00 1930: The Release 5:00 No Fence Could Hold Them 6:30 A Cousin of the Cow 7:30 The Threat Beneath 8:30 Texas Fever 10:00 The Line on the River 11:00 The Ticks Come North 12:00 The Suspect 13:30 The Question No One Asked 14:30 A Courier, Not a Source 16:00 What No One Knows Yet 17:00 Back to the Brush Have you ever seen a nilgai in Texas?
