Description
It's the second Friday of July, ninety-four degrees by ten in the morning, and you're standing in your own backyard looking at an air conditioner that quit overnight. Nine years old. The repair tech left twenty minutes ago, and his verdict is sitting on your kitchen table next to a glass of ice water. Compressor's dead. Parts warranty expired last spring. Replacement quote: $9,175. You didn't budget for that. Nobody budgets for that. And while you're standing there running numbers against your savings account, you hear something over the fence. A low, steady hum. Your neighbor's unit. Same brand. You've seen the sticker a hundred times. His machine is nineteen years old, and it's cooling his house right now like it's got something to prove. Yours didn't make ten. Same logo. Same size cabinet. One fence between them, and a $9,175 gap. The salesman who sold you yours called it a premium brand, and the tech who condemned it this morning shrugged and said they all do that now. Everybody around you agrees you just got unlucky. You didn't.
I'm Hank. I spent 28 years inspecting and renovating homes in and around Chicago, more than ten thousand of them, and I've stood in that exact backyard with a lot of families. Different address, same dead unit, same shrug. Some failures I can call from the driveway. Twenty-eight years does that.
