Description

You Only Need These 7 Canned Foods to Survive Hard Times (All Under $3 at Walmart) If the grocery money runs out before the month does, or a winter storm keeps you home for a week, it won't be an empty pantry that gets you. It'll be a full pantry of the wrong cans. Cans you can't eat cold, and cans that need water you don't have to spare. So today, I'll show you seven cans that actually carry a household through hard times. I looked up every one of these prices at Walmart this week, so I could tell you the truth. Every can on this list is under three dollars. Most of them are under two. Number four has more of one vitamin in a single can than most people get in two whole days. Number two is the one almost everybody buys in the wrong size. And number one isn't meat. It isn't soup. It costs less than a dollar, and it sits on the bottom shelf, right where your eyes never go. Let's start with number seven. Number seven. Canned mandarin oranges. Here's a question most people never ask about their emergency pantry. What runs out first? Not calories. Most pantries have plenty of those. Beans, pasta, crackers, soup. What runs out first is the stuff that used to come from fresh fruit and vegetables. And the one that matters most is vitamin C. Your body doesn't store much of it. Doctors who study this say the classic signs of scurvy, the old sailors' disease, start showing up after about four to twelve weeks without enough vitamin C. That sounds like a pirate problem. It isn't. It still turns up today, in people who live for a stretch on packaged food and nothing fresh. And the first signs are easy to blame on something else. You feel tired, you ache, you're cranky, you don't feel like eating.
