📘 Get the guide → The exact forms, phone scripts, and deadlines Social Security, Medicare, your bank & the IRS never explain in plain English: https://www.franklinlaw.shop All through September, everybody watched one number: the Social Security raise for 2027. Three point four percent, three point six, refreshing the forecasts every week. In mid-October the guessing stops, because the government publishes September's inflation figures and the real number is announced the same morning. Here's what almost nobody tells you. The moment that number lands, a short window opens. For about two weeks you finally know your raise, and nearly everything that decides how much of it you actually keep is still adjustable: your withholding, your tax plan, your Medicare surcharge, your drug plan. After that, the November premium letter and the December notices arrive, and you go from deciding to reacting. Nobody sets a deadline for those two weeks, so this video sets one: October 30. It isn't a government date. It's the point by which a careful person has done everything in this video, while there's still room to do it calmly. I'm Franklin. I read the rules so you don't have to. Here are the eight things that change when the raise lands, in order of urgency. 🔹 THE NUMBER AND WHAT IT MEASURES: Your raise comes from three months of prices (July to September), measured on a working household's shopping list, not yours. Why the headline percentage was never your real raise. 🔹 DO THE SUBTRACTION: Your Part B premium comes out before you see the money. It's $202.90 this year and projected around $209.50 for 2027. Hold harmless is a floor, not a shield, and it skips four groups entirely. 🔹 YOUR WITHHOLDING IS PROBABLY WRONG NOW: The bigger benefit can push you toward owing more, while the new senior deduction of up to $6,000 per person ($12,000 per couple, through 2028) can leave you overwithholding. Fix it before January. 🔹 THE FROZEN LINE: The thresholds that decide how much of your Social Security is taxed ($25,000 and $34,000 single, $32,000 and $44,000 married) have never been adjusted for inflation. A raise plus higher CD interest can tip you over, and October is early enough to move a December withdrawal. 💡 BOTTOM LINE: The raise itself was decided without you. What survives the trip to your bank account is decided in the two weeks after it, and that's a room you're absolutely in. 📅 DATES THAT MATTER: 2027 COLA announced: mid-October Medicare open enrollment: October 15 to December 7 2027 Part B premium announced: usually November Personal COLA notice in your online account: early December Year-end tax moves: by December 31 📞 HELPFUL RESOURCES: Social Security: 1-800-772-1213 | ssa.gov (set up your my Social Security account) Medicare & plan finder: 1-800-633-4227 | medicare.gov Free, independent counseling (SHIP): shiphelp.org Surcharge appeal: form SSA-44 | Withholding change: form W-4V SOURCES: Social Security Administration; Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; Internal Revenue Service; Bureau of Labor Statistics (CPI-W).
