What starts with a beautiful walk past colorful graffiti and blooming jacaranda trees turns into an unexpected journey through old railway photographs, maps, artefacts, train models and historic locomotives. Inside the museum, I discover fascinating pieces of railway history, including old East African railway memorabilia, porcelain, a typewriter, railway equipment and even a ship's wheel that raises a surprising question: why would a railway museum have something connected to ships? The answer goes back to the days of East African Railways and Harbours, when rail and water transport were part of a much larger regional transport system. The Nairobi Railway Museum itself was opened in 1971 to preserve and share this history. Outside, I get to explore some of the old locomotives up close, climb into the driver's cabins, look at the wheels and machinery, and imagine what travelling by steam train must have been like. The visit ends with one of the most unexpected sights of the day: an old locomotive covered in beautiful graffiti, creating an interesting contrast between Kenya's railway past and Nairobi's modern street-art culture.
