Description
Otanabe Seawall | Fudai Floodgate Japan | 2011 Japan Tsunami | Tsunami Protection Engineering | Japan Seawall Construction | Kotoku Wamura
Building a massive tsunami barrier required more than concrete. Engineers had to consider wave pressure, foundation stability, soil liquefaction, scouring and the challenge of protecting river and road openings. Fudai's floodgate construction began in 1972 and was completed in 1984, creating a major line of defence against the ocean.
The tsunami struck with enormous force, sending towering waves and foam against the coastal defences.
