Why didn't Rome Conquer Germania?

Why could Rome conquer almost everything it wanted—but never Germania? Rome conquered Gaul. It conquered Spain, Greece, Egypt, and much of the Mediterranean. Then, in AD 9, three Roman legions marched into Germania and were destroyed in the Teutoburg Forest. But here's what makes the story strange. **Rome came back.** Germanicus launched new campaigns across the Rhine. Roman armies defeated Germanic forces and recovered two of the three legionary standards lost at Teutoburg. So why didn't Rome finish the conquest? In this video, we follow Rome's long struggle with Germania—from the expansion under Drusus and Tiberius, to the disaster at Teutoburg, the Roman retaliation under Germanicus, and the decision that eventually left the Rhine as Rome's practical northern frontier. Because Rome didn't simply lose Germania. **Rome learned that winning battles was not the same thing as conquering the land.** ### Sources & Further Reading Tacitus — *Annals* and *Germania* Cassius Dio — *Roman History* Peter S.
