Why Did Humans Evolve Here? The Strange Story of Africa

How did humans evolve in Africa — and why did we have to keep adapting to survive? For millions of years, the environments of East Africa kept changing. Forests gave way to dry landscapes, droughts were followed by floods, and food and water could become unpredictable. Instead of becoming perfectly adapted to one environment, our ancestors may have survived by staying flexible. This documentary explores how Africa’s changing environments may have shaped human evolution, why our ancestors became increasingly adaptable, why several different kinds of humans once lived on Earth, and how one ancient population bottleneck may have brought our lineage dangerously close to disappearing. From the Great Rift Valley to climate instability, early human survival and the evolution of the human brain, this is the story of how a constantly changing Africa helped shape us.
