Description

By 1944, Romania had been Nazi Germany's most valuable ally in the East for four years. Marshal Ion Antonescu supplied the Wehrmacht with the oil from Ploiesti that kept its war machine running and sent Romanian soldiers to fight alongside German troops on the Eastern Front. Adolf Hitler trusted Antonescu almost completely, and Germany's own officials in Bucharest insisted the alliance was secure. Then, on the night of 23 August 1944, King Michael arrested Antonescu in a palace coup, pulled Romania out of the Axis, and turned its guns on Germany. Hitler, caught completely off guard, ordered the coup crushed, Bucharest occupied, and a pro-German government installed. What his generals did next, and what it unleashed across the Eastern Front, would become one of the costliest chapters of the entire war. This is the full story of the night Germany lost Romania, and everything that collapse set in motion.
