500 Men Disappeared. Only a Hidden Hero Saved Them

In October 1918, over five hundred American soldiers marched into the Argonne Forest and vanished into a trap of their own army's making — surrounded by German forces, cut off from every supply line, and bombarded by friendly artillery fire that had no idea where they actually were. Discover the true story of the Lost Battalion, the runners who died carrying messages that never arrived, and the wounded, one-eyed carrier pigeon named Cher Ami who became the only thing standing between total annihilation and rescue. This is also the story of what happened to their commander, Major Charles Whittlesey, after the war — a mystery that was never solved.
