Description

John Gotti had once ruled New York’s Gambino crime family through fear, loyalty and an carefully cultivated reputation for being untouchable. But behind the walls of a maximum-security federal prison, his expensive suits, powerful crew and famous name could no longer protect him. On July 18, 1996, inmate Walter Johnson confronted Gotti inside USP Marion in Illinois. The attack reportedly caught the former Mafia boss by surprise, leaving the once-feared Dapper Don bruised and bleeding in front of other prisoners. For Gotti, the physical injuries were only part of the damage. A relatively unknown inmate had publicly humiliated one of America’s most notorious crime bosses—and Gotti allegedly wanted revenge. According to federal authorities, Gotti turned to leaders of the Aryan Brotherhood and offered a large payment to have Johnson murdered. Orders were allegedly passed through the prison gang, and bullets were reportedly smuggled inside as part of the developing plot. But before the suspected contract could be completed, Johnson was transferred to the federal supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. Why did Walter Johnson attack John Gotti? How did the imprisoned Gambino boss reportedly contact the Aryan Brotherhood? And did Gotti’s failed revenge plot prove that his Mafia power had finally disappeared? This is the story of the prisoner who left John Gotti bleeding behind bars—and the deadly response that followed. #JohnGotti #WalterJohnson #GambinoFamily #AryanBrotherhood #MafiaHistory #OrganizedCrime #TrueCrime #StreetFiles
