Description
Where did holy water come from, and why do Christians use holy water? The answer is older than most believers assume, and it doesn't begin at the baptismal font. It starts in the Hebrew Bible, where the phrase "holy water" appears exactly once, at the tabernacle laver by the door. It runs through ancient Christian sources: a Syrian bishop sprinkling blessed water on a pagan temple, Egyptian and Syrian prayers over flasks brought from home, and courtyard fountains at church entrances that became the holy water stoup.
We follow the Sunday Asperges and the Theophany blessing of waters, and why medieval believers carried holy water home to their fields, animals and kitchens. We also look at why the Reformers abolished it, and how Methodist, Lutheran and Anglican churches have quietly brought water back. Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant viewers will each find something they weren't taught.
