Description

I am 90 years old. My wife Shameem passed away 20 years ago. My children live far away. My hands shake when I lift a kettle. And yet — doctors who see me cannot explain why a man my age is still walking without help, still making his own tea, still opening his own door every morning. The answer is not medicine. It is not diet. It is not exercise. It is five things I learned only after losing everything. The first — I found an unfinished quilt in Shameem's cupboard six months after she left. The needle was still in it. The thread stopped halfway. That unfinished quilt got me out of bed when nothing else could. A man does not die when his heart stops. He dies when he has no reason to get up. The second — I kept my door shut for eleven days after Shameem died. On the twelfth day, when our mosque muezzin Shafiq knocked and I opened my mouth to answer, no sound came out. Eleven days of silence had stolen my own voice from me. That day I learned — loneliness does not come from outside. It grows behind closed doors. The third — I had not spoken to my cousin Yaqoob for twelve years over a piece of land. We lived in the same street and looked away when we passed each other. Then one evening someone knocked. Yaqoob had a heart attack. We had twelve years for anger and only a few hours for forgiveness. He was gone that same night. The fourth — my neighbour's daughter-in-law offered to make my tea for me every morning. I said no. I had watched my old friend Ramzan accept the same kindness from his children. Six months later his legs stopped working. One year later he was gone. They gave him rest. And rest finished him. The fifth — there is a fourteen year old boy named Imran in my neighbourhood. Fatherless. Failing mathematics. I told him to come every evening. Now I fill two cups from Shameem's kettle. For twenty years that second cup was always empty. Now someone drinks it. He does not need me. I need him. Shameem used to say — a man does not die when his heart stops. He dies
